Introduction
The Department of English, RGU sprouted its roots in the year 2018. The department offers a graduate and post-programme in English Literature which comprises of core, generic, language as well as SEC papers.The central objective of this programme is to enrich our students with communication and reading skills in English. The English department is a guide to those who want to explore the world of literature.The Department plays an active role in the co-curricular activities of the college. The department aims to prepare every student professionally fit for placement programmes in every academic year.We provide various orientation programmes and bridge courses to familiarize our students with the course and the curriculum.

Vision
To develop the knowledge and love for literature and language already inculcated in students. To provide students in all emphasized areas with a coherent curricular framework and relevant, wellstructured course choices. To teach a variety of literary, analytical, pedagogical and theoretical skills. To encourage students to speak, read, and write effectively. To encourage students to think deeply and to reflect on what they have learned.
Mission
The English Department strengthens the liberal education of students by developing a deepened understanding of language and literacy, the value of critical reading and effective writing, and the richness of literature, past and present.
PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs)
A Graduate/post-Graduate student of English Literature should be able to exhibit the following: -
PEO1. Proficiency- Post-Graduates will demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of literature in their chosen domain. They will describe a range of literary techniques and rhetorical strategies used in texts, including their relationship to audience, purpose and cultural context.
PEO2. Analytical Approach – They will be able to recognize poetry from a variety of cultures, languages and historic periods. Understand and appreciate poetry as a literary art form. Analyze the various elements of poetry, such as diction, tone, form, genre, imagery, figures of speech, symbolism, theme, etc. Broaden their vocabularies and to develop an appreciation of literature.
PEO3. : Education for Learning- they will showcase leadership qualities and diverse learning by cultivating versatile skills of teamwork, morality, ethics, communication and analytical skills.
PEO4. Prospective Employment and Career Prospects-To empower the post-graduate students towards employment in the fields of translation, content writing, teaching and orient them for research and higher studies.
PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOMES (PSOs)
PSO1. Literature and Culture: There are aspects of any culture, be it ancient, medieval, Renaissance, colonial or post-colonial; that can be encapsulated and preserved by literature. Literature is not only about studying the timeless verses of the poets and authors but understanding socio-historical structure of the culture of a time period and how it has been represented. Studying Literature does not confine the students to the traditions of England and canonical British literature, but it includes the possibility of introducing them to the techniques and strategies which formulate English Literature, such as the study of Ancient Greek and Latin literature and help them to study literature.
PSO2. Cultural Integration: It is important to understand the trajectory of English literature, how the narrative style and techniques have evolved over the period of time. It is necessary to study the classics but it is also significant to read the literature produced at the margins. Literature that has been created at the fissures, at the hands of those who were not encouraged to write or published. Especially in a subcontinental classroom, where students arrive at the intersection of class, caste and religion, it is absolutely mandatory to understand the language of dissent, class struggle and non-canonical forms of writing Students will be aware of the importance of the coexistence of different cultural perspectives and be tolerant to views different from their own.
PSO3. Literature and Interdisciplinarity: Studying literature makes one aware of what we understand to be literature. Is it just the poems, novels, plays and short stories or can other forms such as cinema and theatre be considered to be literature as well? It forces one to think about various post-modern literary mediums and their interpretations. It encourages students to look at the cinematic adaptations of any literary work as an independent work of literature.
PROGRAMME OUTCOMES (POs)
The Program Outcomes will help students to:
PO1. Demonstrate knowledge of literary terms, major periods, authors, genres, and theories
PO2. Show knowledge of major literary works, periods, genres, and critical approaches to Indian, American, British and World Literature.
PO3. Produce original insights about literature in a variety of forms, styles, structures and modes in scholarly practices with compelling explanatory power.
PO4. Students should be familiar with representative literary and cultural texts within a significant number of historical, geographical, and cultural contexts. Students will be able to identify, analyze, interpret and describe the critical ideas, values, and themes that appear in literary and cultural texts and understand the way these ideas, values, and themes inform and impact culture and society, both now and in the past.
PO5. Articulate the relations among culture, history, religions and texts.
PO6. Communicate effectively on complex literary topics with the literary community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receiveclear instructions.
PO7. Be adept at teaching of English Language and Literature as a career option.
PO8. Students should be able to ethically gather, understand, evaluate and synthesize information from a variety of written and electronic sources.
PO9. Produce creative writing, rhetoric and composition for diverse needs of students and community nationally and internationally.
PO10. Develop the critical thinking skills and creative nuances of the students, such as to be beneficial not only to themselves, but to the society at large.
PO11. Understand the concept & impact of the study of Ecocriticism in the personal and professional spheres in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
PO12. Students should be able to understand the process of communicating and interpreting human experiences through literary representation using historical contexts and disciplinary methodologies.
